Exploring Shared Values and Opportunities for Collaboration in EU-Korea Relations
Special lecture by former South Korean Trade Minister
On February 2nd, the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) hosted a special guest lecture by Mr. Yeo Han-Koo, former Trade Minister of the Republic of Korea. Mr Yeo shed light on EU-Korea relations amid strategic competition. The event, organized jointly by the Green Industrial Policy in the Age of Rare Metals (GRIP-ARM) and IIAS, delved into pressing questions of our time against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world.
Mr Yeo's presentation, which commenced with introductions by IIAS director Dr Philippe Peycam and Professor Dr Remco Breuker, sparked a thought-provoking exchange moderated by Jojo Nem Singh, Director of GRIP-ARM. The discussion navigated various themes, including the challenges of globalization risks, the resurgence of resilient global supply chains, and the growing trend of techno-nationalism.
In emphasizing the significance of economic security and the return of industrial policy trends in global trade, Mr. Yeo underscored the importance of fostering strong relations between the EU and South Korea. He remarked, "The European Union shared values with Korea, allowing a like-minded constructive partner amidst advocating for a multilateral trading system." As geopolitical complexities and economic uncertainties continue to shape global dynamics, whether the EU and Korea can strengthen their partnership remains pertinent.
The lecture concluded with optimism about enhanced collaboration between the EU and South Korea in navigating the challenges of the modern era. Mr. Yeo's insights contributed significantly to ongoing dialogues about fostering cooperation in an ever-evolving global landscape.
